The brief

Gravel Direct is a building and landscaping merchant based in Castleford, supplying and delivering aggregates, paving, timber and tools to trade and DIY customers across the local area. They needed an online shop that could handle a genuinely large product range, from bagged aggregates and decorative stone to timber and plant hire, without turning into a maze to navigate, and one that could take payment online rather than relying on phone orders alone.

The challenge

Builders' merchants sell products that don't fit neatly into a simple grid. Some lines are sold by weight, some by the bag, and some, like slate and sandstone paving, come in multiple sizes and colours with prices that change accordingly. The site needed variable products with selectable options, a way for customers to work out how much material they actually need before ordering, and a checkout that felt as trustworthy as a card machine in a physical shop, since most first-time customers had never bought aggregates online before.

The approach

What we actually built

Full WooCommerce build, organised by category

Construction Materials, Decorative Stone, Paving & Landscaping, Timber Products, Plant/Tool Hire and Tools & Equipment, each as its own browsable category.

Built-in aggregates calculator

Lets customers work out the quantity of material they actually need before adding to cart, cutting down on guesswork and under-ordering.

Variable products for multi-option lines

Paving and slate products that come in multiple sizes, colours and price bands are set up as variable products with selectable options rather than separate listings.

Stripe payments and trust signals in the right place

Secure card payments via Stripe, with the Trustindex rating and delivery/payment badges placed where customers actually hesitate, right at the point of adding to cart.

Delivery built around building materials

Local delivery options configured for heavy, bulky building materials rather than standard parcel courier assumptions.

The result

What's live today

Gravel Direct now runs entirely on the site day to day, from browsing to checkout to account management, with materials organised so trade and DIY customers alike can find what they need without a phone call. The store carries a 5.0 rating verified by Trustindex, displayed prominently on the homepage, and Stripe handles card payments without the business needing to take card details over the phone.
